70 Years Ago Today (the 1939 World's Fair)

Neato Coolville has posted a nice collection of links related to the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. I was just about to sit and do this myself but he did a much better job than I could have done so I will just link to it. Enjoy.

Ralph Wiggum Speaks

When Ralph Wiggums speaks, I listen. Maybe it's because he is my favorite Simpsons supporting character with his one-liners like 'My cat's breath smells like cat food' or 'The Doctor said my nose wouldn't bleed so much if I'd just quit sticking my finger in there.' At any rate I am always using these lines on my wife and, usually, she is not impressed.

AMC is Now Screening FREE Online Streaming B-Movies

The usual culprits are here but the quality is decent and the price is right. AMC is pretty sucky these days (in my opinion) but this kind of stuff can help. TCM has blown them out of the water and they have lost their identity.

The Kwicky Koala Show

From wikipedia:

The Kwicky Koala Show is a Saturday morning cartoon produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1981 for CBS. The program is notable for being among cartoon director Tex Avery's final works, Avery died during production in 1980.

Kwicky Koala was broadcast for one season on CBS. For unknown reasons, the Cartoon Network and later Boomerang broadcast was sourced from PAL masters rather than the original NTSC masters. Though each segment has been shown separately in-between shows on the Boomerang Network
.

Segments shown during this show include Kwicky Koala, The Bungle Brothers, Crazy Claws, and Dirty Dog.

Many episodes appear to be available on youtube but there is no official dvd release available.

Science Fiction Movie Posters

Manolith has posted what they call 18 Science Fiction Movie Posters. Some of them are, in actuality, pulp covers but they are all gorgeous and mostly vintage (somehow the Star Wars movie poster crept in).

Star Wars Blueprints

Yesterday I linked to the Crosseyed Cyclops' Star Wars cards. Well today I found something a lot cooler - STAR WARs BLUEPRINTS. I remember owning these as a kid and planning my own assault on the Death Star. Yes, I was/am that geeky!

Ennion Morricone's Greatest Hits

If you don't know who Ennio is think westerns and think Italy. Yes we are talking spaghetti westerns as the vehicle that made this guy known to the rest of the world but he really did leave behind quite a large body of work and Knifefightingjesus (I love that name) has put this excellent compilation up for your downloading pleasure.

Star Wars Trading Cards

Umm.. I am not quite sure who would want to DOWNLOAD A SET OF STAR WARS CARDS but in case you are one of them this link will net you TWO DOWNLOADS OF STAR WARS CARDS! Music Podcasts (continued)

WFMU is another 'public' radio station similar to KEXP but originating on the east coast (New York). WFMU plays a much more eclectic selection of music than probably most other stations combined (if you do know of a station more eclectic than this please let me know!) and they do broadcast live on the internet 24/7. I enjoy a number of music podcasts from this station on a regular basis including:

Anti Static with Mike Lupica - Mike usually features three 'lost' indie rock singles from the 1990's on each weekly show. There is rarely anything played that could be considered mainstream although most of it should have been.

Bitslap with KBC - Just listen to this week's episode (4/21/9) via this popup player and you should get a good idea of what this show is about. Eclectic is too meaningless of a word to describe this great show!

Cake & Polka Parade with Fatty Jubbo - Sparks, Bollywood soundtracks, weird soundbytes, strange orchestra pieces... it's all here and almost too weird for even someone like me!

Antique Phonograph Music Program - This one is much more mainstream if you consider cylinder and 78 recordings from the turn of the last century as mainstream! If you like this stuff then be sure to check out the defunct Thomas Edison's Attic show archive here.

Do or DIY with People Like Us - I don't listen to this show as much as I used to as it is usually, to me, either a big hit or a big miss. But hey, it's free and the only thing that you lose by trying it out is your time.

Music Podcasts

This week I have decided to highlight the music podcast. I listen to about a dozen of them each week and will present a few of my favorites.

KEXP is a public radio station broadcasting from Seattle, WA (and on the net) and features a large variety of eclectic programming with it's primary focus on indie music and local artists. This isn't to mean that they are bound by either and you would probably be hard pressed to find a better station in the Pacific Northwest.

Podcasts of note:

Song of the Day - A song is posted each day (umm, maybe that's why they named it this way?) and it's almost always indie rock.

Music That Matters - This one comes out about once a week and usually features lots of great indie rock music. It's normally like an hour slice of normal station programming that you can take with you on the go. The show sometimes branches into other genres (indie-rap) but that is the exception rather than the rule.

Live Performances - The station has LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of in studio guests from all genres and locales. Unfortunately most of them never seem to make it to this podcast but it's still worth putting it in your subcribed list. This week's artist was M. Ward from SxSW. Past artists included Loney, Dear, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Starf*cker.

The Flintstones (the Comic Strip)

The Fabulous Fifties has posted the first two weeks of the Flintstones comic strips (from 1961!) and some other promo material for the series. I would love to find this one in a nice hardback someday but for now I guess I will have to be happy with the paperback with some strips from this series that I found at a thrift store a while back.

The Jungle Book (the Chuck Jones Version)

I just found this clip and thought it would be a nice share here. Thanks to Cartoon Brew for bringing it to my attention. It's definitely got the Chuck Jones audio background and animation style going for it.

It is available in it's entirety on dvd.

CBS Saturday Morning 1981 Comic Advertisement

CBS Saturday Morning 1981

A few new shows this year include Kwicky Koala, Trollkins, Blackstar, and Zorro was added to the Tarzan/Lone Ranger Adventure Hour. Now I don't rememeber a single one of them which means that by 1981 I was probably watching another network.

Returning this year: The Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show, The Popeye and Olive Oyl Show, The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show, and the New Fat Albert Show.

Kwicky Koala and The Trollkins were gone by the spring, to be replaced by an expanded Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show.

Portable Multi Video Game System Emulator

Do any of you, my faithful readers, have a device like this? I keep seeing them pop up on Engadget and places like that and I am almost ready to flip the proverbial switch and order one for myself. For about $87 you get this portable device which will emulate almost any 32 bit (or older) video games system on it's 320x240 screen and it will play videos and MP3s. It also includes 4 GB of internal RAM and a mini-sd card slot for increased storage.

Gaming Console Modes:
- NES (Nintendo Entertainment System - 8bit)
- SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System - 16bit)
- Sega Genesis (Sega Mega-Drive - 16-bit)
- GBA (Nintendo Game Boy Advance)
- Neo-Geo (SNK Neo-Geo)
- CPS1 and CPS2 (CAPCOM, arcade game systems, 1st and 2nd edition)

Wow! (?)

Peter Pain (Ben-Gay Ads in the Guise of Comic Strips from 1954)

Blatant marketing to kids in the 1950's? Oh the horror! Anyone who was a tot from the late 1960's to the 1980's can relate to this idea being used against the Saturday morning cartoons of those times.
