Blackstar vs. Bravestarr

Blackstar was a Filmation series that aired in 1981. Bravestarr was a space western, also from Filmation, that aired from 1987-1988 as a syndicated series. These two shows bracketed Filmation's 1980's science fiction cartoon boom led by He-Man and She-Ra. Blackstar was always much more of a favorite of mine, probably mainly due to the fact that I was still somewhat in my 'golden age' of cartoon watching in the early 80's but I really never could identify with any of the characters in Bravestarr.

For some reason I couldn't get this cartoon out of my head this morning so here are a couple of complete episodes. I don't know how everyone feels about Batmite but I loved him when I was a kid.

This Filmation show ran for one year (1977) but was re-aired many times as part of various other packages - The Batman/Tarzan Adventure Hour, Batman and the Super 7, et. al.

It's Gumby Dammit!

According to wikipedia, Gumby was featured in 233 episodes (and this is NOT counting any of the Eddie Murphy "episodes" on Saturday Night Live) over a 35 year period! I had no idea! Gumby was created by Art Clokey in the early 1950's. Two runs of Gumby episodes could be considered the golden years of Gumby - 1955-59 and 1961-68. The animation in the early episodes is fairly primitive by today's standards but I do remember enjoying this one as a child, perhaps because it was usually aired on Sunday mornings and there was nothing better to watch (?). In today's post I tried to emphasize the evolution of Gumby from the 1950's to the 1980's by presenting the first episode of each series. Enjoy!

The First Smurfs Episode

Here is the first Smurfs episode from September of 1981. I guess that there is a Smurfs movie coming (?) but I can't say that I am looking forward to it. It seems that this episode may be missing a little at the end but it's still a great example of what made this show so good when it first started.

I have been working and camping a lot these past few weeks so the Saturday Morning posts have been kind of lame, sorry! They will get back to normal later in August.

The Animated Stooges

I am a huge Three Stooges fan but I can barely stand to watch the cartoons. Oh, they have their moments for sure but they are rather tame compared to the, now, tamer seeming two-reelers.

The New Three Stooges was a syndicated show that ran from 1965-66 and included the voices of the current stooges (Moe, Larry, and Curly Joe) as well as longtime short co-star Emil Sitka. The New Scooby Doo Movies included TWO episodes with the Stooges and they were later part of a segment on Skatebirds titled The Robonic Stooges.

The Worst Cartoons EVER!!!

I got the idea for today's post from Jerry Beck's WORST CARTOONS EVER! dvd. I haven't actually seen it but I am definitely going to order it after watching these clunkers. How do you spell Pee-Yuuu (as in really really stinky)? There is also a website for the dvd here and apparently this is the only place that you can purchase the dvd (at $15 it's not a bad deal).

I tried to stay away from bands that actually existed in the real world but I did include a couple of bands that existed because of the tv show.
