The Deadalicious blog has posted a nice set of cool toys and even cooler books from his collection. It's got The Fonz so it must be cool right? Ayyy! (argh, how do you spell that?)
This week's vintage comedy album tribute continues with this stinker. It's more of a cabaret album than a comedy album but that is what you got when you bought music on vinyl back in the 60's and 70's - unless you knew someone who had the album, you never really knew what you were getting until you bought it and listened to it.
Gizmodo has a feature (including a rather low-quality video) about this over-the-top model. When I was kid I used to marvel at the models in the museums and always wanted to create them when I 'grew up.' I guess I still want to but I have no talent in that area.
This week Cool-Mo-Dee is hosting a special salute to the comedy album! At one time this genre was extremely popular as hundreds of well-known (and even some unknown) masters of comedy recorded their routines and released them for public consumption. This genre has since been mostly supplanted by cable tv but a few standouts still exist (Adam Sandler and Weird 'Al' Yankovic for example). In addition to this 'four pack' of comedy albums, we will be posting another comedy album each day at 1 pm so come back every day and see what is new.
Burns & Schreiber - The Watergate Comedy Album (posted at Dr. Forrest's Cheeze Factory) Vintage and timely (if it was still 1974) comedy album from a mostly forgotten duo. Link
Rodney Dangerfield - No Respect (posted at Any Genre Goes) This one was enormously popular at the height of the genre's popularity. I am sure that everyone remembers Rodney's signature line - 'I don't get no respect.' It tends to get old but there are still some choice bits in this album. Link
Bill Cosby - To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With (posted at Bobo's Favorites) My mom had this one so I used to listen to it a lot before I could afford to purchase my own albums. Is that a ringing endorsement or what? Link
Various Artists - The Best Comedy Album In the World... Ever (posted at Zona-Musical) This is a great starting point for the person wanting to explore the genre, lots of different bits from lots of different artists. Highly recommended. Link
Highlights this year are a new Mr. Magoo show, Skatebirds (to cash in on the skateboarding craze - of which I was a part - of the late 70's), Space Academy (live-action show with Jonathan 'Dr. Smith' Harris), and a Tarzan/Batman show with Batmite and Burt Ward and Adam West providing the voices for the dynamic duo. Returning were the Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour (expanded to 90 minutes by mid-season), The Secrets of Isis, and the Fat Albert show. A variety show called Wacko was attempted but it only lasted for a few weeks!
To put it in simple terms, there was lots and lots of crap on CBS in 1977! Not much of this dreck is fondly remembered and it was pretty hard to find ANY video footage on the net, which is quite an oddity when one searches for Saturday morning cartoons.
This live action science fiction series aired from 1976-1977 on CBS during it's Saturday morning 'cartoon' lineup. This was one of the many post-apocalyptic survivors on the run series during the mid to late 1970's. Only thirteen episodes were created but that was seemingly enough to fill TWO SEASONS of Saturday mornings!
The complete series is available on dvd (Amazon.com link - there are some used copies available for less than ten bucks!) but I could find only one episode on the internet.
Next stop: the motherland. Well, I guess it is only the motherland if you are actually from RUSSIA (I am not) but what the heck. Thanks to Toulaki for posting.
Poe Ghostal's Points of Articulation blog (a real mouthful to be sure) has posted a list of the top ten mail in action figures of all time and it brought back some dusty memories of mine dealing with the mail-in Boba Fett figure. I think that my brothers and I had saved enough proofs of purchase to get five or six of these things and we ran to check the mail every day for MONTHS as this thing seemingly NEVER came. Months later it finally did show up but the rocket launching capability of the backpack was now missing! What a gyp!
The wikipedia entry calls this show 'similar to Scooby Doo' but it was much more than that! Only 16 episodes of this show were produced and it first aired as a mid-season replacement for the Scooby Doo show. Not available on dvd but most of the episodes appear to be available on youtube and Boomerang seems to show it regularly. One premise of the show was fairly new at the time - one of the kids stayed at home to help solve the crimes using her home computer, something that was virtually unimaginable at the time for most people.
The show is reviled by a lot of people as a direct Scooby Doo knockoff but the only real similarity is that this is a group of kids that solve crimes. Hanna-Barbera did a lot worse when it came to copying their popular shows!
This one was making the rounds this week and it was this really sweet portrait of Jimi Hendrix that caught my eye. What else can one do with old cassette tapes?
Prinsi Raimund - Lo Stallagio del Leon D'Oro (Italy 1979) - posted at Italian Folk Music Nice mix of instruments that you don't get to hear very much in popular US music. Link
Various - Africa Roots Vol. 4 (Africa) - posted at Likembe An excellent collection in from one of my favorite 'World' music locales. Link
S.D. Burman - Adradhana OST (1969 - India) - posted at Parties, Sarees and Melodies A decent soundtrack album and a good introduction to vintage Bollywood soundtracks. Link
Buddah Bless - Kat Man Du (Thailand) - posted at Monrakplengthai Nice modern Reggae/Dancehall album from Thailand. Different. Link
Stay tuned all week as we present a new post each day from a new land.
I just finished watching AMERICAN SCARY, a documentary about the history of US based horror hosts, and I had to rush over to my computer and rant and rave about the show on my blog. Many will probably nitpick it to death if it doesn't include their favourite horror host but it does manage to hit most of the biggies (Elvira, Ghoulardi, Vampira, Zacherle, and many more) and many of the small ones (Hoolihan and Big Chuck/Big Chuck and Little John - one of my favourites growing up in the Cleveland, Ohio area). They did happen to miss a few of my other favorites (Superhost for example) that I would loved to have seen again but there is always youtube for that! Minor quibbles aside, it is still an excellent piece of documentary film-making that is required viewing for every fan of the genre.
Available on dvd and on instant watch from Netflix (excellent quality on my home theater PC).
