CBS Saturday Morning 1973

A couple of reruns and retreads and a few new 'bombs' based on hit tv shows of the time: Jeannie and My Favorite Martian speckle this hit and miss, mostly a miss, year from CBS. And let us not forget Bailey's Comets, a cartoon about a Roller Derby team that goes around the world looking for clues that lead to a million dollar prize!

To be fair this was the debut year for Speed Buggy, which went on for ten years and was a fairly entertaining concoction for my childhood mind.

I was unable to find video clips for Everything's Archie.

Strange Album Covers Revisited

This one was posted at the LP Cover lover blog and while they don't usually feature audio clips from the ablums that they post they made an exception this time and posted a short MP3 clip from this album.

The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan

Not available on dvd and hard to find on youtube, this series is considered mildly racist these days but it was somewhat based on the Charlie Chan detective series of movies from the 1930's and 40's that was going through a mild popularity burst during the early 70's.

It's time for you to take another visit to the Crosseyed Cyclops. This time they are hosting the Hammer House of Horror series of magazines.

Windmills of Your Mind

The cover picture and title combine to promise what surely must be some long forgotten psychedelic masterpiece but instead you get more of a lounge-y affair. Now that's not necessarily bad but it was a little dissapointing.

The Pac-Man Dossier

Everything you always wanted to know about Pac-Man but did not necessarily know where to ask..

What? You haven't played Pac-Man in over twenty years? Me neither. To save you the trouble (and monotony) of getting yourself to level 256 here is a video of what happens when one gets to this level:

Les and Larry Elgart - Wonderful World of Hits

Apparently all you had to do to sell your crappy elevator music lp in the 70's was slap some half-nude woman on the cover. I'm not saying that these guys are bad (or good) but this concept has always intrigued me.

The New Scooby Doo Movies

Twenty four episodes were produced for this series that aired in 1972 and 1973. The concept was good as many guest stars rotated through in each 'movie' including the Three Stooges, Batman and Robin, The Harlem Globetrotters, Sonny and Cher, Don Knotts, Jerry Reed (!), and many more. This was the last Scooby series with new content until 1976 when the franchise moved to ABC.

Most episodes are available on dvd (with a few notable exceptions) and it seems that all episodes are available on youtube.

Jumping the Shark

In case you weren't alive in the late 1970's this is where the phrase 'jumping the shark' came from. It alludes to the fact that this is a defining moment in a tv series' life when the show goes completely down the tubes as it strive to re-identify itself and it ends up ruining everything that was good. It's inevitable with any successful series and it's kind of unfair for Happy Days to get the moniker but that's how it is!

CBS Saturday Morning 1972

I wouldn't call this the most exciting year in Saturday Morning tv but it did see the debut of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (which ran for 12 years!) and a new incarnation of a Scooby show (The New Scooby Doo Movies). Bugs Bunny reruns were also shown this year but a newer show would debut in 1973.

Omega - Hungary's Most Famous Rock Band

barin99 has posted all 9 albums from this legendary psych/space band. Here is a quote from AMG if you are still undecided:

The most successful Hungarian rock band in history, Omega was formed in 1962 in Budapest by a group of friends. The lineup changed several times during Omega's early years and there was no consistent music style to speak of. Like with many other rock groups of the early '60s, the band's repertory largely consisted of songs by popular British bands of the period. Only in 1967, when they were joined by Gábor Presser (keyboards, vocals), did they began recording their own songs and issue a few singles. Presser's mixture of rock with elements of jazz and folk proved to be a winning formula. In 1968, John Martin, the manager of the Spencer Davis Group, invited them for a tour in Great Britain, where they recorded the album Omega: Red Star From Hungary for the Decca label. Later that year, they issued their first Hungarian LP Trombitás Frédi és a Rettenetes Emberek (Trumpeter Freddy and the Terrible People) that became their first golden album. The band sealed their success with two subsequent LPs: 10,000 Lépés (10,000 Steps) (1969) and Éjszakai Országút (On the Highway at Night) (1970). Their 1969 song "Gyöngyhajú lány" (The Girl With Pearls in Her Hair) became their first international hit and it was reworked by the Scorpions into "White Dove" in the mid-'90s.
