Eerie (the magazine)

The Manchester Morgue has posted 8 issues of the old magazine EERIE, the old Warren mag/comic series from the 70's. Check it out! There were lots of good stories in here and the artwork was normally pretty good.

77 Sunset Strip Comic Book

Anyone remember this show? It was a little before my time but it was on in syndication. Here we have a good example of another 'lost' form of pop culture - the tv/movie related comic book. Sure, they still make them these days, but the home video market basically killed this market (and a lot of others)..

Here Come the MONSTER Cartoons!

One of my favorites growing up as a kid were the cheesy B-movie packages that most of the local channels ran (most definitely because they were so cheap). The popularity of this stuff eventually bled over to Saturday mornings with the big one being Scooby-Doo.

Let me know if I missed your favorite by posting in the comments and I will post an update on a future blog posting.

Scooby Doo - Rare 1969 Instrumental Opening

Frankenstein Jr. and the Impossibles - Opening (1966)

Godzilla (and Godzuki) - Opening (1978)

King Kong - Intro (1966)

Drac Pack - Intro (1980)

Milton the Monster - Opening (1965)

Animated Openings to Classic TV Shows

While none of these are actually Saturday morning it was a chance for us kiddies to get our cartoon 'fix' on days other than Saturday back when most of us only had five or six channels. Oh the horror of that! I can't even imagine what my kids would do if it went back to that! If you can think of any more that you think I should have included please add your comments and I will post an update next week.

Bewitched - Original Color Opening - 1967

The Lucy Show - 1962

The Wild West - 1965

Batman - 1960's (STILL not on dvd)

Vintage Hostess Comic Book Ads

Branded in the 80's has recently been posting a bunch of those old late 70's/early 80's cheesy Hostess ads that were in comic books. Do you remember those? Fascinating stuff like: Batman chases after the Riddler because he stole the shipment of Hostess cupcakes, Superman saves the earth from aliens intent on blowing it up by introducing Hostess cupcakes to them (!).

Big Boy Restaurants

The ASIFA blog has posted a really nice article with lots of illustrations and a near complete comic book from the Big Boy franchise. I do remember the highlight of my childhood Big Boy meals being the free comics that they gave.

Vintage Novelty Items - Gag Gifts

Ms. Apricot has posted a nice, but small, set of vintage novelty gift pictures at her flickr page. I remember sneaking in to the backs of stores and just laughing hilariously at many of these things during a not-so-small part of my wasted youth.

Comic Book Land - Terrytoons (1949)

Anyone remember the old Terrytoons? - A staple of Sunday mornings in our house back in the 70's as we argued with our mom about getting ready and going to church.

Music Monday - Vinyl Lives in MP3 Format

The first post this week is from the apparently defunct Record Brother blog - The Cricketeer OST. While virtually unknown in much of the world, cricket is quite big in India so naturally there are a quite a few movies about the game that have been made in Bollywood through the years. Link (to blog)

Next we take a trip to the Caribbean compliments of Gojira's blog with The Caribs: "Caribbean Capers with the Caribs". Why is it posted on the Godzilla blog? Heck, I don't know... Link

We then move to some 'modern' jazz with the Sexteto Electronico Moderno in Sounds From the Modern World. Compliments of the Collector magazine. Link

And last we have Som do Paulinho singing... well I have no idea. My Rapidshare link is not timed out so I couldn't preview the album. I only posted it because of the totally goofy cover - Maybe wearing women's hats was much cooler back in the 70's? Link

Star Bright and Other Science Fiction - Mark Clifton (book review)

I have a real soft-spot for 1950's short story science-fiction, the 'golden-age' of science fiction literature in my opinion. I love the youthful exuberance and unabashed optimism that emanates from this pre-1960's Vietnam/Civil Rights/Nixon era of literature. Of course we now know that most of this stuff is absolutely impossible but the authors of this age wrote with such an innocence that my generation (I was born in 1967) and future generations will surely never experience.

Included in this volume are the classic Star Bright in which a young girl has superpowers that noone could possibly understand, A Woman's Place - a very early feminist work, and four or five other classics.

Mark Clifton may not be well known today but his writing is right up there with the other giants of the age. This collection is only available in ebook format but the stories are available elsewhere if you prefer a paper version.

Cereal Geek - a Magazine Devoted to Animation of the 80's

I have just received word about this fantastic looking new magazine from the UK called CEREAL GEEK. The mag is devoted to animation of the 80's and there are some pretty cool looking preview pages posted on the website (you can order directly from the publisher here as well).

Update: Or can you order from the website? I tried clicking on the link and it is out of stock. Bummer!

Amos and Andy Explained (From the June 1930 Popular Science)

Modern Mechanix usually posts more 'techie' stuff - if you can call anything that is 70 years old 'tech' - but today there is a nice article that tries to explain the popularity of one of the greatest old-time radio shows of all-time, The Amos and Andy Show.

Illo - a NEW Magazine Devoted to Illustration

We're Late For Class - A Collection (2007)

Direct from the artist's blog, here is a band that gives their stuff out for free over the web. Hard psychedelic so many of you may not be into that. 75+ minutes with an animated GIF album cover - wouldn't that be a nifty thing to pull off in the record stores?

Various - Sgt. Pepper's Redux Volume 3 (2007)

On the Flipside has posted the third volume in their series of Sgt. Pepper's various artists compilations. What you get is a complete album done by other than the original artists. Some are pretty good and some are not-so-good but I am a big fan of Beatles covers, especially re-interpretations, and this one does not dissapoint.

Pink Panther - The Ultimate Guide

Apparently there are a bunch of copies of this book on sale at Amazon.com for a penny (plus $3.99 shipping). I can't vouch for the quality because I have just purchased a copy but the reviews seem very positive and you can't deny that this is one heck of a good deal! So get it now! Celebrity Cartoons - Part 2 (Saturday Morning Cartoons)

More celebrity induced madness...

Hulk Hogan's Rock 'N Wrestling - Intro (1985)

Prostars - Intro (1991) - Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, and Wayne Gretzky!

The Harlem Globetrotters - Intro (1970)

Will the Real Jerry Lewis Please Sit Down? - Intro (1970)

Celebrity Cartoons - Part 1 (Saturday Morning Cartoons)

Ahh, vanity projects for celebrities! You have got to love them. I mean, who wouldn't want to see Little Rosie on her own Saturday Morning animated show? She's funny as the trailer-park housewife ROSEANNE so why shouldn't this translate to Saturday morning?

Wait a minute, what the hell were they thinking? Of course it does not help that I find Rosseanne Barr to be a bit annoying...

Little Rosie - promo (1992)

Life With Louie - Christmas Episode (1994)

The Hollywood Animation Archive has posted a wonderful set of artwork by Felix Lorioux from a book of fairy tales that he illustrated back in the 1920's. Check out this example at the right and try to tell me it's not one of the most beautiful and whimsical pieces of art you have ever seen.

Music Monday - More Crap That Will NEVER Make It To CD (or Itunes)

The Democratic Party - posted by RecordBrother - Henry Fonda narrates this history (up until 1956 when the album was created) - side 1 side 2

Mackintosh and TJ OST - posted at Snow Day - most of the music is by Waylon Jennings, not really my cup of tea but this is a rare soundtrack that rarely sees the light of day. Link (direct to music)

Richard Haymand and his Orchestra - Voodoo - posted at Xtabay's World - back in the 1950's this stuff was like printing money, lounge music with which you could infuse your cocktail parties.

Dukes of Hazard - OST
- posted at runrabbitrun - Lots of crap that you probably never wanted to hear again collected in one easy place for you to not listen. This makes a great party album, throw it in when everything is going well and watch the looks on everyone's face.
