Mining the Audio Motherlode

About once a week, Doug Schulkind of WFMU, posts another installment of 'Mining the Audio Motherlode', a collection of links to lots of rare music that has been posted at other blogs. Usually there is some kind of international flavor to the music and that is not all that bad. The links are not direct download links so you will have to click the links to follow on to the next web site in order to get the goodies!

Enoch Light - Music At the Movies

Here is a nice collection of easy listening tracks from Enoch Light including the Star Wars theme song, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and three songs from Saturday Night Live. The Star Wars theme sounds like a halfway point between the John Williams original and the MECO version.

Aircraft Carriers of the World

This is pretty far from a normal blog post here but being that I am an ex-squid I thought that this comparison chart was interesting. I don't think that you can truly appreciate the massiveness of this thing unless you have been up close to a US aircraft carrier.

Laurel and Hardy don't get a lot of attention these days but I still enjoy them. Boot Sale Sounds has posted three shorts at their blog.

A Visual History of In-Store Video Game Kiosks

Before we had any video games at home I used to hang out at the stores (Sears) and play the 'free' video game kiosks until they kicked me out. This one brings back a lot of memories for sure!

The Flintstones Chronology - Part 2

Last week we looked at the Flintstones from 1960-1973 (Link).
The next Flintstones related show, Fred Flintstone and Friends, aired from 1977-1978 as an afternoon syndicated series and was a repackaging of four other Hanna-Barbera cartoons (Goober and the Ghost Chasers, Jeannie, Partridge Family 2200 A.D., and Yogi's Gang) hosted by Fred Flintstone. This was the first series in which Alan Reed did not provide the voice of Fred (he died in 1977).

The New Fred and Barney Show aired on Saturday mornings for one year (1979). It is interesting to note that Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm returned as toddlers in this series.
Blood Brothers
Fred and Barney shows were then rerun (with some new episodes) as part of the next few series: Fred and Barney Meet the Thing (1979) and Fred and Barney Meet the Schmoo (1979). The former also starred the Thing (of Marvel Comics Fantastic Four) and the latter added the Schmoo to the same lineup. Fred and Barney never actually met EITHER of these characters in any of the cartoons!
Fred and Barney Meet the Thing - Intro
The Flintstone Comedy Show aired from 1980-1982 and was another Saturday morning anthology show of mostly new Flinstones related cartoons, The Schmoo and Captain Caveman. The show was 90 minutes long (!) and managed to make it for two seasons before being replaced by the next Flintstones show. A favorite segment of mine during this run was the Frankenstones, a segment about a Munsters-like family that lives next door to the Flintstones. Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm make their return to teenagers in this series as well.

Bedrock Cops - Barney and the Bandit
Pebbles, Dino, and Bamm-Bamm - Dino and the Giant Spiders

The 30 Worst Album Covers EVER!

While I have seen my share of absolutely hideous album covers (most of which did not make this subjective list) I can't argue with the original author, these things are really bad!

Raymond Chandler Ebooks

A lot of Raymond Chandler ebooks have been posted in multiple formats at the mobileread forums recently. There is lots of detective pulp fiction goodness here and it's free.
From wikipedia:
Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 – March 26, 1959) was an Anglo-American novelist and screenwriter who had an immense stylistic influence upon the modern private detective story, especially in the style of the writing and the attitudes now characteristic of the genre. His protagonist, Philip Marlowe, is, along with Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade, considered synonymous with "private detective."

Deal Alert: The Wizard of Oz Three Disc Emerald Edition Blu-Ray Set ($16.99 at Amazon.com)

In case you missed this deal the first time around it is now available again. The transfer is superb (too good almost as you can really tell how fake the sets were) and the extras are great. I recently finished watching the 6 hour history of MGM and consider that necessary viewing for classic Hollywood buffs.

The Flintstones Chronology - Part 1

The original Hanna-Barbera show had it's initial run on prime-time network tv from 1960-1966 and was not at all unlike a prehistoric version of The Honeymoooners.
Season 1 and 2 Opening
Season 3+ and Syndication Opening
The show was cancelled in 1966 but The Man Called Flintstone was released later that year to theaters.
The Man Called Flintstone Movie Promo
The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show aired on Saturday mornings from 1971-1973 and featured a teenaged Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm (voiced by Sally Struthers and Jay North).
No Cash and Carry
The Flintstone Comedy Hour was next, airing from 1972-1973 as a sort of anthology series on CBS and featuring new episodes with Fred and Barney, musical numbers, and repeats (and a few new episodes) of The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show.
