Jay Ward Productions
Jay Ward founded this studio in 1949 solely for the purpose of producting animation for the evolving media market known as tv. The studio was perhaps best known for creating the Rocky and Bullwinkle show but they are also the creators of the well known, and long lasting, character Cap'N Crunch. The limited animation format adopted by the studio was partially founded as an artistic device but was later utilised by many studios to lower the cost of producing animation for Saturday morning animated fare.

Hooked On Books

This site is technically a storefront but I just love to browse the old paperback covers from almost any genre that I can imagine. Prices range anywhere from $4 to hundreds of dollars but the books are well organized and it's almost like going to a paperback museum.

Various - Classic Russian Movie Soundtrack Compilation

I picked this one up at our local Hasting's a few years ago (for a buck) and found it in our garage last night. It's a nice two cd set of classic Russian movie soundtrack songs (I think, the cd is all in cyrillic but I found the set on a Russian website). Two discs of nice Russian folk music and well worth the download if you are into this sort of thing.

Animated Cereal Commercials of the 1980's

As the 80's wore on I slowly removed myself from Saturday morning cartoons in pursuit of other more worthy ventures (a job in the military, family, etc.) and as cable and satellite slowly took their foothold the Saturday morning cartoon was barely recognizable by the end of the decade. There were still many memorable animated spokesmen for the morning wheat/oat based breakfast product but even this chapter in American advertising history was drawing to a close. A highlight of the 1980's cereal scene had to be the many short-lived cereals based on popular fads of the time.
The previous installments of this series can be found here: 1950's 1960's 1970's
Strawberry Shortcake Cereal
The Superfriends for Post Cereal (1981)
Super Sugar Crisp (1977?)
Rocky Road Cereal (1986)
Tony The Tiger (and other mascots) for Kellog's Cereal (1980)
Bill and Ted's Excellent Cereal
Toucan San for Fruit Loops (1987)
Smurfs Cereal (1980)

Barnes and Noble seems to continually offer a nice selection of over 50 free ebooks. You can remove the DRM (fairly easy) if you can find a copy of ereader2html.py (search for it here using google) and then convert the ebooks to any format that you would like using Calibre.

Laff-A-Lympics Comics

One of my favorite shows when I was a kid was this one because you got to see all of your favorite H-B characters in one show. I don't know for sure it it was rigged but it sometimes didn't seem like a fair contest to me!

Meco - Superman and Other Galactic Heroes

I was really excited when I found this one in the bin of one of my local thrift stores but it just doesn't deliver! I don't know if it's because I had such fond memories of Meco's Star Wars songs or if it's because I just dislike this generic form of disco so much but I can tell you that it sounds very dated and rather formulaic. From 1978, the album is mostly a tribute to the very popular Superman movie of the time but side two is labeled as 'Other Galactic Heroes' featuring tributes to Batman and Robin, Tarzan and Wonder-Woman - but I can't for the life of me figure out how they relate to these characters! I was hoping that they would be related in some fashion to the correspondingly well-known tv themes but alas this is not the case as they are rather random sounding to me.
MECO's entry From Wikipedia:
Meco (real name Domenico Monardo, born 29 November 1939) is an American record producer and musician, as well as the name of a band or production team based around him. Meco is best known for his 1977 disco (Space Disco) version of the Star Wars theme from his album Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk; both the single and album were certified platinum in the U.S.
Track Listing:
1 Superman Theme
2 The Destruction of Krypton
3 The Trip to Earth
4 Growing Up
5 Fortress of Solitude
6 March of the Villains
7 The Flying Secquence
8 Can You Read My Mind (Love Theme from Superman)
9 Chasing Rockets
