Manchester Morgue has posted 10 (of 12) issues from 1982 of this comic/magazine. I always loved the artwork but as I got older I found many of the stories somewhat silly and the gratuitous nudity a bit ridiculous.
Through a long list of referrals (including PCL Linkdump) I have found this pretty cool article about the history of decals and thought that it fit in quite well with this blog.
Since there was no post last week I figured I owed you a bonus post this week. This year can best be described as VARIETY HOUR YEAR. Maybe this was meant to capitalize on the hit variety shows of the late 70's? Saturday morning cartoons were always a bit behind the times when it came to capturing popular culture.
Godzilla/Dynomutt/Funky Phantom! Fred and Barney Meet the Schmoo! (with the Thing!) Batman and the Super 7! (with Isis and the Freedom Force, Manta and Moray, and Web-Woman!!!)
Dynomutt - Episode 1
The New Schmoo Show - Opening
The Flintstone Comedy Hour - repackaged in 1982 as THE FLINTSTONE FROLICS
It seems that I can now access Youtube videos so we are BACK IN ACTION! Not a great year for NBC but not terrible either. Herbie the robot is back though so I will let you be the judge! For some reason I do not seem to remember this from keeping me from watching the show (at 12 years old).
I decided not to include the Daffy Duck reruns in this post...
Alvin and the Chipmunks - Opening
The Fantastic Four - Magneto Tries to Get Gas and Park
The Thing Action Figure - Commercial
Godzilla - Intro
WBZ-TV Kidsfair open/close 1979 - with Jonathan Sahula of "Get Off Your Block."
Apparently Turkey doesn't have (or didn't have) very strict copyright laws so they made bad clones of hit American movies all of the time. Here is an absolutely horrible (but in a good way) clip from the Turkish Batman movie. Dig the soundtrack!
I don't normally use this blog as a political arena (and won't for sure, you can count on that as we near our presidential election later this year) and I don't get up on the soapbox much but, for the love of god, why does anyone buy anything that is DRM'd (Digitally Rights Managed)?
The iTunes store is extremely popular but do you know what will happen when your iPod breaks (they all break eventually) and you decide to get a non-Apple product?
Click the link below to find out what is going to happen to anyone who bought into Yahoo's music store. It seems that all of these 'small' DRM stores are going out of business these days and basically giving the finger to their customers as they do so.
Big 10 Inch Record has posted a nice rarity ALICE IN WONDERLAND with Ginger Rogers. It seems that Disney was actually considering using Ginger in their version before they changed gears.
I have been sitting here for an hour trying to get some video off of youtube but no luck. The videos keep coming up as being removed from the system so maybe they are killing all of their copyrighted material now?
If the situation gets better I will post NBC's Saturday morning 1979 next week. You aren't missing much anyway - Alvin and the Chipmunks, Godzilla, Fantastic Four, and Daffy Duck. After 1979 - or probably 1980 - I will probably move on to a different network and start in the 60's again.
I don't usually feature a lot of modern stuff but I really love this Feist song and seeing her do it on Sesame Street (which is vintage in many ways) was a real treat, especially with the new lyrics!
A good year for an eleven year old boy with The Fantastic Four (despite losing the Human Torch and adding Herbie the Robot), Yogi's Space Race, and the Godzilla Power Hour. Still missing in action is a clip for BAGGY PANTS AND THE NITWITS, which only lasted for two months before being removed forever (apparently).
Yogi's Space Race - Intro
Jana Of the Jungle - Intro (from the Godzilla Power Hour)
This week's bonus post is a complete episode of CB BEARS - THE MISSING MANSION MYSTERY. Lots of familiar voices from the era and a look at a popular fad of the time period. I found the cartoon to be much better than I thought it was going to be.
Jeff Vanermeer's ECSTATIC DAYS blog has a nice posting dealing with 70's Indian (as in India the country) comics. Lots of Indian history and lore are included in these pages and most of them (or all?) seem to be in English.
Here is a nice blast-from-the-horror-past!! I have a rather large collection of 70's horror comics and I have never seen these. I have not yet downloaded for myself so I can't vouch for the quality but the cover art looks great! Thanks to datajunkie for posting these six issues of this rare series.
Datajunkie has posted a nice collection of vintage images titled 'Heroees From the Funny Books.' Lots and lots of nice graphics related to comic book heroes moving to the big screen.
Link (from Petquality's Twindowlickin' Tales - this posting has quite a few old 78's posted, all dealing with birds)
Link (a total shifting of gears here! Psychedelic/stoner/hippie rock from an internet band that lets you download everything for FREE!!! Good lengthy jams.)
Link (from the hippy-djkit blog. Note: this is not the hit POPCORN by Perry-Kingsley)
Link (the last one is from musictraveler - a nice compilation with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Contortionists, and a couple of other early New York no-wave bands.)
Getting closer to my 'golden age' memories of these Saturday Morning Cartoons. I was ten in 1977 so I remember many of these cartoons with fondness.
NO RERUNS THIS YEAR! Well, unless you count the mid-season replacement for BAGGY PANTS AND THE NITWITS (Land of the Lost). I couldn't find any clips for THUNDER, BAGGY PANTS AND THE NITWITS and SEARCH AND RESCUE THE ALPHA TEAM. THUNDER was a show about a really smart Black Stallion (and one that I don't think I ever watched) and THE ALPHA TEAM was a prime-time series in Canada that aired on Saturday mornings in the US.
CB Bears - Intro
Space Sentinels - Intro (started the season titled YOUNG SENTINELS)
Sabrina the Teenage Witch - Two Rabbits Too Many (from the NEW ARCHIE/SABRINA HOUR)
I Am the Greatest the Adventures of Muhammad Ali - Unknown Episode
