Flash Gordon (old-time radio drama)

Click here for some FREE old-time radio shows featuring Flash Gordon. Flash was once a very popular pulp-fiction/science-fiction hero but there has not been much media to keep his name in circulation over the last twenty years that I know of, short of the 80's movie with the Queen soundtrack.

Superhost!

A favorite movie host of mine as a kid growing up near Cleveland, Ohio was SUPERHOST. He showed some Three Stooges, a couple of cheesy science-fiction/horror B-movies (I mostly remember getting my Godzilla fix here), and lots of goofy homemade shorts/parodies/commercials.

Here is a one-page write-up.

Click here for a family sponsored page, including a link to buy a $12 dvd (I have to get this one!).

And, believe it or not, click here for his Wikipedia entry.

Indian school room posters

Indian school room posters - propaganda for the tykes!

Click here for some good examples.

There are a few American companies that sell these but I can't seem to find them right now. I would love to get the hygiene one to hang in my basement!

Kiddie Records

A lot of my early youth was misspent on crappy kiddie records like this one. Kids today just don't realize how good they have it - hundreds of tv channels, cartoons on the tube ALL DAY and EVERY DAY, VCR's/DVD players, video game systems, MP3 players, etc. The list goes on and on.

60's Psychedelic Posters

You have to love this stuff... ok, maybe you don't have to but I really do. The colors, the intricate lines, the subject matter. Oh how I wish I was a few years older sometimes (not often mind you).

Comics Cover Browser

Click here to jump to Comic Cover Browser. By no means is it complete but there are lots of fun covers to see here.

Arnold Stang

I have to admit that when I first came across this post on WFMU's Beware of the Blog I didn't remember who Arnold Stang was. I knew that the name sounded familiar but I guess in a way I was thinking of Arnold STRONG (Arnold Schwarzenneger's early screen name for HERCULES IN NEW YORK). Of course after I saw the pictures on the page I immediately remembered why the name sounded familiar to me. Click here for a very excellent and detailed write-up about this comedy (should have been) legend.

Flickr tag browser

Here is a cool little app that allows you to 'surf' Flickr images much more easier. I really love flickr but I HATE trying to browse using their website.

Anyone remember this goofy beast of a Saturday morning cartoon? Of course they had to add a goofy animal (as they did for almost every other sitcom that they translated to Saturday morning - see the Brady Kids) and some alien spacewoman.

Click here for EVERYTHING that could possibly be known about this series including some audio AND video clips. Fun.

The Six Million Dollar Man

Whatever happened to this series? The Sci-Fi channel played some Bionic Woman reruns a few years back but this one is conspicuously AWOL from tv and/or dvd in the United States.

There is an excellent entry for the series on wikipedia.

Click here to see a clip from the fan favorite THE SECRET OF BIGFOOT episode. This dvd is (or at least was) available from the UK but it is region 2 and not playable on most US dvd players. I have a copy and recommend it if you can play it.

It's not technically available on DVD but that doesn't stop this company from selling the complete series (29 dvds for about a hundred bucks).

Kenny Powers and his rocket powered car jump

If you are a child of the 70's (like me) you probably remember Evil Kneivel and his crazy stunts - jumping the Snake River canyon in his rocket car is the most memorable one but there were many others, like the shark tank jump at Caesar's Palace.

But I do not remember hearing about Kenny Powers at all. A recent post on Digg had a link to a you-tube video that was a five minute clip of his attempted rocket car jump over some river in New York. It's a bit silly and anyone that knows any basic physics could probably guess that this wasn't going to work long before he actually attempted it but it is a glimpse into the fascinating 70's trend of daredevil stuntmen trying to outdo each other.

Apparently, there was a Canadian documentary made about Kenny called 'The Devil At Your Heels.' I couldn't really find a link to the actual movie (which is long out of print and not, as I can find, legally available on VHS or DVD). I did find a nice review at the Brains on Film website which you can find by clicking here.

I also discovered that if you live near Toronto or Montreal you can go to the Montreal CineRobotheque or Toronto Mediatheque and watch the film there.

Right: The famous jet-powered Lincoln.

Cool street art

I couldn't figure out which picture to post because a lot of them look real but I thought these pictures were worth spreding around. Kind of a cool 'concept' art thing.

Fleer Crazy Labels (1979)

Who didn't love these as a kid? They may have been a blatant ripoff of Wacky Packages but we loved them all.

Happy Days 'action' figures

Mego, in addition to it's wonderful line of superhero action figures, also produced many other sets including Happy Days. What kind of action are we talking here? Well, maybe you can make Fonzie jump a shark? Or you can have the boys play New Kids on the Block? I don't know, it doesn't seem that these would be that much fun to play with and I don't remember owning any although I was a huge Happy Days fan.

Visit the MEGO MUSEUM for more fun.

Guess what THIS is?

Anyone remember the old TV show 'To Tell the Truth'? In this show they would bring out some weird device and a panel of 'celebrities' (Bill Cullen, Betty White, Nipsy Russell are a few that I remember) who would try to guess what the item was used for. The contestants had to guess which 'celebrity' was telling the truth.

Click here to find out what they are.

I want a 'God*Jesus' robot too!

There are probably thousands, if not millions, of Beatles covers in existence, many from some very well known folks (William Shatner singing Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds being a not-so-good example).

X-Minus One (old time radio science fiction style part 2)

I can't remember if I posted this already. I know that I posted Dimension X though so I wanted to follow it up with a series that was nearly identical, X-Minus One. This is another absolutely classic science fiction series loaded with stories from the golden age of science fiction, a necessity if you consider yourself a science fiction fan. Click here to start downloading.

Kiddie Records Weekly

This project has been going on for a couple of years so many people that would ever be interested in this stuff probably already know about it but for those of you that don't, Kiddie Records Weekly is an online project in which an old kiddie record is posted every week (no fooling?). Lots of obscure gems have been posted and are available for free download. The site will also sell you a dvd if you want them all and don't want to download each individual posting.

Hooray For Bollywood!!! (Arzoo OST)

Music From the Third Floor Blog

So this person has a huge box of old Bollywood soundtracks on vinyl, what should they do with them?

Convert to MP3 and share with the world?

Yes.

Click here for the ARZOO original soundtrack.

(What is Bollywood? The Indian film industry is almost as big as Hollywood in the USofA. If you have never heard these songs you should check them out. Most people will probably hate them but I absolutely adore them.)

You too can make a BACON PLACEMAT

Go to this link at instructables.com, a website that is normally full of very useful instructions, and learn how to weave a bacon mat.

Chuck Norris 'fan' page

I hate to admit it but I was a huge Chuck Norris fan back in the Good Guys Don't Wear Black days. Why? Hell, I don't know. I suppose he was the Stephen Seagal of his day. Anyway, a 'fan' has posted a 'tribute.' You have to page down a bit but it's worth it (and funny).

Thriller action figures (and not from the Vincent Price tv series)

I know that the video and song AND artist were very popular but I had no idea that they were popular enough to warrant a release of SIX ACTION FIGURES!!!

Get the scoop here.

Vintage Russian Posters

Bibi's Box had a nice little blog posting dealing with vintage Russian posters featured at the Museum of Russian Posters, a fascinating look at the history of Russian posters.

Saturday Morning Cartoons (the Jackson 5ive)

Oddly enough, back in the days when we hardly ever got to watch cartoons - from the early 80's and earlier - just about ANY hot subject could have their own cartoon. And now that we have sixteen different cartoon channels NOBODY gets their own cartoon!

One big trend in the late 1970's was giving bands their own cartoon. The Jackson 5ive cartoon was one such toon.

From what I remember it was nothing special but it was done by nostalgia fan favorite RANKIN-BASS (Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus, etc.).

The opening can be seen here on youtube.

Click here for an episode guide.

Rube Goldberg

Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist in the early 1900's known for his wacky inventions (an idea which was surely copied by many cartoons in later years).

Mego! Super-Heroes! Mego!

Anyone who has any memories of those fantastic Mego action figures should immediately click here to be taken away to the Mego Museum. This is THE site on the internet for information about everything Mego.

In SPACE (1999 style), EVERYONE needs a parachute...

This is my excuse to my wife and co-workers about why I am so damn goofy - it's the toys that I grew up with. Note the Space:1999 figures and their 'parchutes.' Didn't this show take place on Moonbase Alpha or something like that?

Taken from Plaidboy's Rack Toys Gallery, a fantastic website loaded with great photos.

Umm, did Captain America ever carry a gun? Even if he did I don't think he would have used it on colorful little ducks!!!

Vintage Board Games

I just stumbled upon this one while looking for Crazy Foam info. This guy sells old board games but there are tons of great box pictures here. I don't remember hardly any of these games (but most of them are just a bit before my time.)
