Kenny Powers and his rocket powered car jump

If you are a child of the 70's (like me) you probably remember Evil Kneivel and his crazy stunts - jumping the Snake River canyon in his rocket car is the most memorable one but there were many others, like the shark tank jump at Caesar's Palace.

But I do not remember hearing about Kenny Powers at all. A recent post on Digg had a link to a you-tube video that was a five minute clip of his attempted rocket car jump over some river in New York. It's a bit silly and anyone that knows any basic physics could probably guess that this wasn't going to work long before he actually attempted it but it is a glimpse into the fascinating 70's trend of daredevil stuntmen trying to outdo each other.

Apparently, there was a Canadian documentary made about Kenny called 'The Devil At Your Heels.' I couldn't really find a link to the actual movie (which is long out of print and not, as I can find, legally available on VHS or DVD). I did find a nice review at the Brains on Film website which you can find by clicking here.

I also discovered that if you live near Toronto or Montreal you can go to the Montreal CineRobotheque or Toronto Mediatheque and watch the film there.

Right: The famous jet-powered Lincoln.

Left: Not exactly an athletic physique!
