The Head (a traditionally animated short)
MGM: When The Lion Roars
I just finished watching the 6 hour documentary MGM: When the Lion Roars that was included on the third discs of The Wizard of Oz blu-ray set and it was great! Patrick Stewart was a little too over the top for me but the documentary is a solid look at the complete history of this fabled studio from inception to it's demise. Highly recommended!
The video clip below was a highlight reel of sorts that was shown at the beginning of each 2 hour 'episode.'
The dvd is available by itself (for $24 from Amazon.com) or you can get it as the third disc in the Wizard of Oz blu-ray three-disc set, presently priced at $40 but I got it on sale for $14 a few weeks ago (as did a few of my readers when I mentioned the sale).

1960's Animated Commercials

Most of the animated commercials from this era were pretty low budget but they had a certain style that made them seem much cooler than could be imagined. Throw in a catchy jingle or two and you have something that usually stands up pretty well to the ages, certainly as well as most tv shows or cartoons from the era. Inspiration for this post comes mainly from Cartoon Modern by Amid Amidi which is a truly wonderful book featuring many images from this era of animation. Highly recommended!

Dickie Dare - Comic Strips Scans From 1939

Two full runs of scans from September through October of 1939.
Link (September)
Link (October)
From wikipedia:
Dickie Dare was a comic strip syndicated by AP Newsfeatures. Launched July 31, 1933, it was the first comic strip created by Milton Caniff before he began Terry and the Pirates.
In 1932, Caniff moved to New York City to accept an artist position in the Features Service of the Associated Press. He did general assignment art for several months, drawing the strips Dickie Dare and The Gay Thirties,[1] then inherited a panel cartoon called Mister Gilfeather in September 1932 when Al Capp left the feature. Caniff continued Gilfeather until the spring of 1933, when it was retired in favor of a generic comedy in a panel cartoon, The Gay Thirties, which he produced until he left AP in the fall of 1934.

Free Comic Book Day: May 1, 2010

Don't forget to mark your calendars now for this great event! You don't have to buy anything but you do have to find a participating comics retailer. Our local Hasting's (a western US books/movies/music chain) even participates so you don't necessarily have to have a comics shop.

Team Canada Slapshot Through The Net
Olympic hockey is sizing up to be a great battle between the US and Canada for the gold. Let me throw out my recommendation if you are a sports and not generally inclined to watch hockey because this one may be one for the ages. US vs. Canada in Canada on Sunday (if both teams win their semi-final games. Team Canada is really melding together quite nicely (although it certainly helps to have four San Jose Sharks playing on the same line).
Oops... oh forget the video clip, it looks like it has now been blocked by the USOC. I know that they want to protect their copyrights but really? A few seconds of highlights from an Olympics hockey match isn't going to hurt and it probably would help increase ratings.
I tried to get some video from NBC's site but I am using Ubuntu and I can't run Silverlight... (Microsoft's Windows only streaming video platform)
Well, I guess you can go to CBC.ca and watch highlights of the Canada vs. Russia game here. Even though the final tally was 7-3 it was pretty intense throughout.
UPDATE: Ok, so I watched the CBC video and there are not highlights from the game. Way to go Olympics committee. You need to get with the times.

Videogames and Cartoons

A common practice back in the glory years of the Saturday morning cartoon block was to adopt popular fads by making them into Saturday morning cartoons. Most of them sucked, but there were a few good ones here and there so today I am going to take a short trip down my memory lane. You may note that this is a very short lane (my 'golden age' of Saturday morning cartoons was mostly based in the 70's and a little of the early 80's) so I will be leaving out lots and lots of stuff.

MiceAge has posted a whole slew of stills from this nearly forgotten movie from 1962 that was actually shot in the park at Disneyland. The movie is now available from Amazon print on demand dvd service if you are interested in further exploration but for me I think that they charge too much for those (although this one is might tempting!).

Anyone Remember M.U.L.E. (the Commodore 64 game)

MULE was a gigantic hit for me and my friends back in the late 80's as we tried to cram four people around our Commodore 64 keyboard to play. We must have spent hundreds of hours playing this game and I always wondered why it was never remade (short of an NES version I think?) or updated. Flash forward twenty plus years and we now have Planet M.U.L.E. for Windows, MAC, and Linux.
Did I mention that it was FREE?

Enoch Light and the Light Brigade - Discotheque Vol. 2

This one is pretty much an easy listening standard that one always finds in the thrift store bins. I think it's much better than your average easy listening/lounge album but there are still a few clunkers in here. Highlights are two Beatles covers and a version of The Girl From Ipanema.
