I don't exactly know why I linked to this one but I think it had something to do with the days when my brothers and I would tape a needle to a cone of paper and then put this on a rotating record to hear it in lieu of using the electronics. I think we thought that we had made some amazing discovery...
It was hard enough manually spinning records at 33 RPM (or 45 RPM) on a greased and ready to spin turntable so I can't even begin to imagine the difficulties one would encounter trying this on a spoke at 78 RPM.
(and this is why all of those kiddie records that you see in thrift stores are so messed up!)
