The Motion Design blog has posted a nice article about the history of French animated commercials that is highly worth a few minutes of your time. I have include one youtube video in my post but I think a person really could enjoy oneself by poking around in this field a bit more. Think of those old Depatie-Freleng cartoons (the Pink Panther) and imagine that done with even more panache.
