NBC Saturday Morning 1972

NBC started this year off with a block of reruns (Underdog, Jetsons and the Pink Panther) and was then dominated by cartoon version rip-offs of popular prime-time shows - The Houndcats (Mission Impossible), Roman Holidays (Flintstones/Jetsons) and Barkleys (All in the Family).

The Seattle World's Fair

Believe it or not, they STILL have World's Fairs (according to Wikipedia they are planned out to the next ten years or so) although they don't seem to publicize them very well. The World's Fairs of old were a great place to marvel at the possibilities of the future and Walt Disney sure seemed to love them for this reason although most of the predictions never really seemed to come true. Today's link is an excellent overview page from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as they celebrated the 40th anniversary of the 1962 World's Fair in 2002.

Star Wars MOOG Soundtrack

36 15 Moog has posted this classic MOOG adaptation of the original Star Wars soundtrack. Created back when Star Wars was all the rage and Moog was a quicly fading fad, I remember snapping this up at our local Rink's (bargain store chain in Ohio in the 1970's) because it was about half of the price of the 'real' soundtrack and I didn't know any better.

Saturday Morning Commercials Part II

I am going on vacation for two weeks (commencing with a 12+ hour drive to Seattle today) so I may or may not be updating the blog every day during this time. Today's SMC post is short but I will pick up where I left off when I return (NBC 1972 I think).

Psychotronic Videos Available at the Internet Archive

Anyone who is a big cult movie fan certainly has this book in their collection but even if you don't the Eye of the Goof has compiled a list of psychotronic (i.e. cult) movies available at the internet archive.

For starters I would recommend White Zombie, a real classic and this one didn't make the list for it's camp values.

NBC Saturday Morning 1971

This year was somewhat dominated by live action shows and cartoon retreads and, needless to say, was a rather horrible year in NBC history - although they did call it The NEW Pink Panther Show. I guess it was technically NEW as they did add some new cartoons to the Pink Panther rotation including The Ant and the Aardvark, Inspector Clouseau, Mr. Jaws and Catfish the Hunter.

I could not find any streaming clips for the live-action BARRIER REEF and TAKE A GIANT STEP but from what I hear that is not the greatest loss to society given the shows' dismal ratings. If you know of any links to video clips please post them in the comments. Otherwise you can click here for a downloadable RM video of the opening to BARRIER REEF.

1971 NBC 'bumper'

Dr. Doolittle - The Grasshoppers Are Coming Hooray!

Deputy Dawg - Space Invitation

The New Pink Panther Show - The Ant and the Aardvark

The Bugaloos - Older Woman

Mr. Wizard - 1950's Version

And they re-re-re-ran episodes of the Jetsons and Woody Woodpecker....

Diorderlies/Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn Original Soundtrack

Today's Music Monday bonus post was brought to you by THE MANCHESTER MORGUE. I actually have some fond memories associated with this movie. I saw it in 3-D and I was on a date with some unremembered girl and this time we, or at least I, actually watched the movie.

Next up is the soundtrack to the Fat Boys movie, DISORDERLIES. I was never really a fan back in the day but one of my brothers was a huge fan of these guys. The movie was pretty ridiculous and rather lame but is a fun watch these days because it is so dated.

Treasury Comics . com

I just found the most amazing website that is loaded with vintage comic artwork, articles and interviews. The gallery has to be seen to believed - hundreds of cover scans that, when clicked, lead to informative little snippets about the book as well as advertising artwork. Really really nice!

Vintage Mountain Dew Commercials

I have been watching this cool show on the History Channel called AMERICAN EATS. I really enjoy it because it is loaded with vintage commercials and info-mercials and I almost always go to youtube after watching an episode to see the entire commercial and find others.

The second clip that I have posted is pretty long but it was the best COLOR version that I could find. Everything after the first minute and a half is relatively new and is probably not worth watching (in my opinion). The last clip is from some foreign country (I don't recognize the language at all) and is pretty recent but interesting nonetheless.

75 Years Ago Today in the Comics Page

Click on the images to zoom in. The Tribune page has a nice Buck Rogers strip (very wordy though!) and I included a Mickey Mouse and Gasoline Alley strip from a different paper.

Shazam Coloring Book

Plaidstallions posts an old coloring book every week and this week he posted a SHAZAM! coloring book. This one has pretty good artwork if you consider that fact that it is a coloring book and that most coloring book art is pretty minimalist. As a kid I probably would have hated it because it looks like it is too hard to color!

NBC Saturday Morning 1970

A pretty lame year for NBC with lots of reruns that I won't be covering here and little action. The campaign against cartoon violence was in full force this year and it led to a pretty dismal Saturday morning lineup. Highlights of the year were the live action Sid and Marty Kroft shows - The Bugaloos and H.R. PufnStuf - and Hot Dog starring Woody Allen, Joanne Woodward and Jonathan Winters.

Heckle and Jeckle - Foreign Legion Birds

Tomfoolery - Half of an Episode

Bugaloos - Intro

The Further Adventures of Dr. Doolittle

The Pink Panther - Intro and Outro

H.R. Pufnstuf - Titles and Clips

Here Comes the Grump - Opening

Hot Dog (with Woody Allen) - Pilot Intro

Hot Dog - How to Make a Baseball Glove

I Guess Some Words Mean Different Things These Days

Handbell Hero

I should save this one for Christmas but I know that I will forget so here it is - the next iteration of Guitar Hero - better than GH4 and more fun than Rock Band - HANDBELL HERO. Use your home keys and your left hand to pilot your way through such awesome classics as JINGLE BELLS and WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS - exclusives, as far as I know, to this game.

Soundtrack-O-Rama on Music Monday

Here is a good starter for the week - the original soundtrack to the classic BATMAN tv show (thanks to the Crime Lounge for posting this one). While you are visiting this blog don't forget to search for the other two Batman soundtracks that they posted last week.

Next we have two Rudy Ray Moore comedy albums from the 1970's. Raunchy 1970's comedy, I remember listening to these at my friend's houses - their dad had the albums (and some girlie magazine collections) not them!

Children's Records and More has posted a couple of cool Disney LP's - Disney Hall of Presidents and Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln. I always thought that the attraction was kind of creepy...

Times They Are a Changing... Or Not

I found this old political cartoon from the February 13, 1974 edition of an old newspaper. Seems meaningful even today, 30+ years after it was published!
