Photo guide to the ACE double mystery paperbacks

Another of my many collections is ACE doubles - those old paperbacks with one book on each 'side'. I only have a dozen and they are all science fiction but the big lure for me is the absolutely wonderful artwork on the covers as evidenced here. Click here to see all of the ACE Mystery doubles.

Epcot Center - pre-operation brochure

Click here to see a brochure that was published shortly before the official opening of the Epcot Center.

I remember getting this as a kid and actually buying into every last word of the hype. I also remember begging my mom to take us but she never did (well, not until 1993 but that is a different story for a different time).

Peanuts, by Charles Bukowski

Imagine, if you will, that Peanuts was created by one Charles Bukowski. Pretty funny to imagine something like this going on for forty years in America's newspapers.

Heritage USA Amusement Park Map

I never actually went to Heritage USA while it was open but my brother's father in law was the sheriff there (or whatever they called him) so we got to stay there shortly after it closed when my brother got married in the area.

I have a strange fascination with old amusement park maps and if I didn't collect a hundred other things I would collect these. I do have an old Disney World map that looks pretty cool.

Click here to see the full map.

Bet you don't have THIS Harry Potter book!

With Harry Potter mania at an all-time high I found this link to some bootleg chinese Harry Potter books and thought that it would be worthy of sharing. I wish I could read Chinese...

The Open Library

The Internet archive is undertaking another ambitious project, The Open Library. They only plan to carry public domain titles but there are thousands (if not millions) of excellent possibilities. Lots of wonderful vintage books with lush illustrations are availalbe in their entirety with many more to come.

Simpsonize Me (again)

In case you didn't know it, the Simpsons movie is coming out soon (duh!). Burger King has a web site that allows you to upload a picture and have it converted to a Simpsons character. It seems to be pretty picky as to which photos will work so make sure you read and follow the directions carefully.

Vacation time...

No posts for the past few days due to a mini vacation to see YO LA TENGO and then BUILT TO SPILL. Both shows were incredible and now I can mark two of my favorite bands as being seen (of course I would go see them again!). Being a fan of both band's older works rather than later I was not dissapointed in their choice of setlists as both did a good job of including the best of their vast catalogs.

1977 toy catalog

I don't know where the people that run PLAID STALLIONS get all of their stuff but they always come up with the grooviest ads.

World's Greatest Toys - Mego 8" Superheroes

Click here for information and lots of great pictures from the book WORLD's GREATEST TOYS - MEGO 8" SUPERHEROES.

I don't actually have the book and I have never seen it but some of the sample pictures look really good.

Deviant Art store

I haven't actually ever bought anything from this website but they always have lots of cool stuff that I would love to decorate my home with, like this Alice In Wonderland print.

Some people really like their Legos but check this out

This person has taken a liking to recreating famous scenes/art/movies/etc. with Legos and posting them to Flickr.

'Classic' game show video clips

Click here for the Classic Television Showbiz blog entry for 'The Riddlers,' a pilot for a game show starring DAVID LETTERMAN. This pilot was created in 1977 at the height of the big game show craze but was never actually turned into a series.

Gilligan's Planet Cartoon

Another in the vein of 'I didn't know they made a cartoon of that.' I remember watching this one all of the time. It was silly but we didn't have a lot of choices back then.

Indian Superman and Spider-woman

This is some really wacky stuff here! I wish I could find the entire movie with subtitles. I actually love Bollywood films and I love superhero films so what a perfect combination! Superman and Spiderwoman do the dance of love! How romantic.

Tales Of The Wizard Of Oz: Free Trade [1961]

Another rare cartoon that doesn't see the light of day much any more. They used to have a little video booth (actually it was probably playing a film) at the mall in which you put a quarter in and you got to watch a random cartoon. This was one of them that I remember (not this episode).

Roald Dahl homepage

Who doesn't have fond (although somewhat disturbing) childhood memories related to a Roald Dahl book?

(I am still not forgiving my mom for telling me that the chocolate factory was in a town three miles north of us when I was a kid. She had some story about how it burned to the ground or something like that. Of course it never dawned on me that nobody in this northern OHIO town had an english accent....)

ninja training (flash game)

Click the picture above for the game. Simple graphics and controls power this unique and fun game that anyone can pick up and play.

Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy (text adventure)

Talk about a blast from the past. I just stumbled upon this thing on the BBC website.

This game came out sometime around 1986 and arrived at the height of the Infocom text game craze (Zork, et. al.).

They did add some really cheesy graphics but the text engine is still exactly the same.

If you are craving more of the old Infocom games there are many emulators available online.

Or you can play the original Zork series here.

Mego 1976 Superheroes Toy Line-Up

Not the best video quality but a cool trip down memory lane.

Coca Cola's propaganda albums

WFMU has an interesting post today in which a couple of corporate Coca-Cola albums are available for download as MP3 (albums - old black vinyl things that you spun on a little machine to make music).

Very interesting as they try to ape the current sounds of the day to shill their product. I remember my mom having a couple of Coke 45's when I was growing up but those songs are not on these albums.

Simpsons flash game

An extremely simple game but you can easily pick it up and play it without any effort.

Click here to test your skill. I got one to shoot about 34 yards or so.

Legends of the Superheroes

I just found this on my new favorite blog. A live action show from 1979 that aired on Saturday Mornings that was created by Hanna-Barbera.

Wonderfully bizarre.

Six Million Dollar Man with Bionic Grip

Another Six Million Dollar Man reference but pretty cool.

Everyone Has To Have a Hobby

Well, some people collect baseball cards and some people ski. This guy makes a skull a day and posts it on his blog.

Planets of the Apes Cartoon!! Episode 1

Apes craze was huge in the late 70's. I only caught the tail end of this before Star Wars craze completely took my life over for a few short years. Sit back in your chair and watch the first episode of this somewhat rare cartoon.

PART 2

PART 3

Bloons (flash game)

Aim the arrow and see how many balloons you can pop. Easy to pick up, hard to put down!

Virginia Belmont's Famous Singing & Talking Birds

Awkk.. (choking up my own vomit sound)

WFMU brought out a real peach today! Click here to download this and then marvel at the pure and utter crap that is slowly oozing it's way from your ears to your brain (very similar to the first time you listened to that new Britnica LaSimpson cd I'm sure).

Optical Illusions (that you can see on your monitor)

Click here to see Akiyoshi's illusion pages and have fun exploring. There are quite a few illusions here that really seem to be moving.

French comic book page (english comics)

Les Dessins De Pierre Alary (I took four years of french in high school - lycee - and I don't know what Dessins means). Lots of cool comics stuff, mostly black and white pages.

Make yourself into a Simpsons character

With the Simpsons movie just around the corner, Simpsons related items are popping up all over the web. The official movie website has a character generator but many people feel that this one is better. I don't know though, the picture at the right is the best that I could come up with to represent myself.

Click here for the Simpsons movie website.

July 5th

Sorry, I should have posted this yesterday as it was more appropriate for the FOURTH of July (not the Fifth!). WFMU had a nice blog posting yesterday with lots of 'groovy' stuff - the original 12" mixes of James Brown's 'Living In America', the Goodtime Party album pictured at left (umm, I don't know if this album will quite help you have a party like THAT but hey, one never knows!), and a link to the Captain Kool and the Kongs (anyone remember these guys? If you like the Sid and Marty Kroft shows you should).

Computer Programmer or Serial Killer?

Here is a fun little game that you can play at home! Programming Language Inventor or SERIAL KILLER? It's not as easy as it sounds. I got 6/10. A co-worker got 7/10.

You've probably heard of Google EARTH, now try Google MOON

Unfortunately, you can't get directions and the street view van has not yet made it to this location but it is still kind of cool. Click here if you are too lazy to type moon.google.com.
