3. All American Comics (#1-18 take up the next 18 spots in the list)

5. American Flagg

6. Batman - 1966 Comic Strip

The Decade of the DVR

The PVRBlog has proclaimed the 2000's the decade of the DVR and I can't argue. This device has literally changed the way that my family watches tv and we have had a DVR since the first Tivo's - First Tivo, then a very short stint with the Motorola cable company unit, then a couple of Replay TV's, and then three or four different Dish network DVR's before we settled on two VIP-622's. I still think that TIVO was the best but I can't say that I am happy with their present marketing strategy (i.e. sue everyone who makes a DVR) and I have to have the satellite receiver integration so I am stuck with Dish network DVR's for now. I notice that when watching some cable networks there are sometimes up to EIGHT MINUTES OF COMMERCIALS in one block so I would probably not even watch those shows if I did not have a DVR.

What about my readers? Any thoughts on this issue?

Rudolph's Shiny New Year

The Great American Fourth of July

Our family just finished watching MY SUMMER STORY (a movie based on the writings of Jean Shepherd and once again narrated by Jean) and we found it mildly entertaining, certainly not up to the caliber of A CHRISTMAS STORY but close in my opinion. Being on somewhat of a Jean Shepherd kick recently I have been searching for the other movies based on his writings and came upon this on youtube. A very young Matt Dillon stars as Ralphie in this PBS movie.

empeefree's top 10 posts of 2009

It has been a pretty good year over at our companion blog so let us run down the top postings for the year:

1. U-Spaces Psychedelic Archaeology - a great collection of psychedelic tunes from this Yahoo group. The Chocoreve links may be dead but the group lives on and has published a number of excellent compilations to date.

2. Pearl Jam - Atlanta - April 3, 1994 - a fantastic live set from Pearl Jam that was broadcast on the radio.

3. Sex, Sleaze & Soul (A Collection of Vintage Porno Funk Tracks) - a fun collection of 70's porno funk tunes.

4. Mystic Astrological Crystal Band - ST (1968) - trippy psychedelic music

5. Joy Division - Les Bains Douches - December 18, 1979 - nice live set from one of my favorite post-punk bands (that later went on to form NEW ORDER)

6. Various Artists - Frolic Diner Volume 4 (???) - 'stripper' instrumentals. I see that I must be getting lots of hits from people surfing for pornography!

7. Public Image Ltd. - Commercial Zone (1981) + 2 live sets - good stuff from John Lydon's (Johnny Rotten) post Sex Pistols outfit.

8. Beatles Alternate Anthology I - a good set of studio and live outtakes. Don;t forget to get set II and III.

9. Wire - The Complete Peel Sessions

10. Led Zeppelin - Live at Earl's Court (20 FLAC CD's!) - Gigantic set of classic rock goodness.

The Most Disappointing Movies of the Decade

(pictured: GANGS OF NEW YORK)

So CinemaBlend.com puts up their most disappointing movies of the decade list and everyone on the net links to it! I wasn't going to link to it either but I thought that it would make good cannon fodder if nothing else.

1. The latest Indiana Jones movie wasn't any worse than the second or third movies in this series. For this matter, when is a sequel ever not a disappointment? Does that still make it a disappointment?
2. Gangs of New York was a halfway decent movie. Everything that Scorcese touches does not turn to gold so I wouldn't really call this a disappointment.
3. The first Transformers movie really wasn't a great movie so why should the second one have been any better? It amazes me that this one ends up on everyone's worst/most disappointing lists.
4. Ok... the Grinch movie was very dissapointing. Ron Howard directed and Jim Carrey was at the peak of his career.
5. Was anyone really dissapointed by SHREK 3? I thought it was an entertaining movie and certainly pretty good for the THIRD movie in a cartoon series franchise.

Anyway, read on by clicking here and tell me what you think.

New Year's Day Related Cartoons

This might be a hard one but I thought it would be fun to find out which, if any, cartoons were created to celebrate New Year's Day. There are tons and tons of Christmas themed cartoons but how many are there for this special day? Let's find out!

(I know, most of this stuff didn't air on Saturday mornings.)

Update #1 (7:45 AM): Ten minutes into my search and I am having a heck of a time finding ANYTHING! I knew that it was going to be hard but wow...

Update #2 (8:10 AM): I must be forgetting something, didn't any of my favorite shows as a kid (or even Looney Tunes?) make a New Year's Day episode?

Update #3 (8:20 AM): If I stretch my search a little I can find some episodes that take place on New Year's Eve/Day and some Japanese Anime.

Rudolph's Shiny New Year - Father Time's Song

For Better or Worse - A New Year

Arthur - Arthur's New Year's Eve

Zoo - New Year On Farm (Russian)

The Spectacular Spider-Man - Shear Srength

Prince of Tennis - New Year Special (Japanese Anime)

The movie is SCROOGE and the horror host is Rev. Chumley. For some reason I thought that he had quit doing this gig so I was happy to see a link to this show this morning in my inbox.

Disney Christmas Cards

I think that these cards are absolutely wonderful and I wouldn't mind getting a set of my own but I bet that they aren't cheap. Cards from 1938-1950 are posted at the ASIFA blog.

Jean Shepherd on Archive.org

I don't know how long he has been there but archives of Jean's WOR shows are now available on archive.org. Who is Jean Shepherd you may ask? Have you ever seen A CHRISTMAS STORY? He is the original author/scriptwriter/narrator of the movie that is based on vivid retellings from his childhood memories. Highly recommended.
