Summer Is Winding Down In the Northern Hemisphere - It's Not Too Late for a Nice Fall Hike

It's still not too late to head over to the American Trails website and find a nice hiking trail. Fall hiking is, to me, generally the best hiking for a number of reasons. The summer heat is now waning, the leaves are changing colors and, as an added bonus, there is usually lots of edible fall fruit if you know where to look.

Topographic maps (US only) are now available for FREE on the internet at:

www.archive.org - the search engine for this website sucks! Come on, you have one of the most awesome websites on the planet and you top it off with THAT search engine?

United States Geological Service - This government run agency has FINALLY put topographic map scans online and they are free. You don't have to download their GEOPDF plugin to get them to work.

Kenner's STAR WARS Toy Commercials

This video that I am posting isn't dvd quality but it's kind of a fun trip down memory lane (56 minutes worth). This compilation seems to focus on most of the newere toys (I can't really watch it right now as my video playing functions seem to be broke on my Ubuntu box right now).

Rabbit Wants Cake (Flash Game)

This one is a nice take on a very simple platformer. You have to record your moves BEFORE anything happens and then you watch your rabbit perform those moves as he tries to get to the cake.

12 O'Clock High (TV Comics)

Anyone remember this show? I don't remember ever seeing it. The Crosseyed Cyclops has posted two issues from the old Dell Four Color series inspired by the show.

Open Source Software

Find open source (i.e. FREE!) software alternatives for such expensive packages as Microsoft's OFFICE or Adobe's PHOTOSHOP? You say it can't be done? Click on the link below for all of the details. I routinely use Open Office (the Office alternative) and Gimp (the Photoshop alternative). And my main home computer system is running Ubuntu.

More Animated Commercials (the Groovy 70's)

I have always loved animated commercials and they were always a chance to get our cartoon 'fix' when there weren't any real cartoons on the tube! For today's installment I think that I have selected a group of commercials that does a really good job of representing the early 70's. If you are aware of any other good ones that I have missed please let me know in the comments.

Peter Max American Cancer Society

Wyler's Lemonade

Yet Another Drive-In Intermission Reel

This one was one of my favorites (next to the circus with the dancing hot dog)

R. Crumb's Short History (and Future) of America

a

This is a nice little montage created by R. Crumb depicting the rise into urbanization of one piece of wilderness. I guess he also created a couple of more scenes later in his life depicting the future:

Even More Drive-In Intermission Reels

The Dark Vault of Public Domain - Episode 17

It's nice to see that the web is now providing a nice platform for lots of amateur horror hosts across the country! Here is an old episode from 2008 featuring The Devil's Laughter edition of One Step Beyond and a feature length edit of 12 Demon Street called The Devil's Messenger.

10 Best Movies That Did NOT Win the Academy Award For Best Picture

I was sure I knew what the number one pick would be (hint: It lost the award to ANNIE HALL) but I can't argue with this author's picks. Can any of my readers come up with any better choices? Comedies seem to always fair poorly when it comes to this award.

Drive-In Intermission Ads

You might be wondering why I am showing Drive-In intermission ads as part of the regular Saturday Morning Cartoon feature? Well, I always loved the cheesy animation and many times I did technically watch these things on Saturday mornings (i.e. Friday night after midnight). Ok, it's a cheat but hopefully you will enjoy these! Archive.org now has 23 complete drive-in intermission loops! Wow!
