Chelada Reviews at Beer-Snob Sites

See how 'beer-snobs' rate this tasty concoction by checking the links below:

(I guess I need to qualify this by saying that I too am a beer snob. I have rated 150+ beers on www.ratebeer.com but strangely enough I did not rate Chelada there as it didn't even occur to me to think of this conglomeration of flavors as a beer!)

Glyphjockey Reviews Budweiser's CHELADA

Glyph Jockey found a can of CHELADA in the store last week and was lambasting it's existence on his blog so I challenged him to a taste test and even offered to pay. He apparently declined my offer to pay but he did do the taste test and the results are posted at the link below.

Please Kill Me - The Uncensored Oral History Of Punk (a book review)

Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk (An Evergreen book) by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain

I just finished reading this and thought I would share a few comments. First, the title is very misleading. It's not so much a history of PUNK but more so the New York music scene in the days leading up to the PUNK movement. There are a few small chapters about the Sex Pistols but even those deal more with Sid and Nancy AFTER THEY MOVED TO NEW YORK!If you want to read about some of the pioneering New York bands that this is a recommended read (The New York Dolls, The Ramones and the Velvet Underground get a majority of this book but there is also a lot of information about Patty Smith, Television, The MC5, The Stooges (mainly Iggy Pop AFTER HE MOVED TO NEW YORK!).

There is really no mention of any other early punk bands short of the Pistols so if you are looking for that you should look elsewhere (ENGLAND'S DREAMING by Jon Savage or RIP IT UP AND START AGAIN by Simon Reynolds are both great places to start).

I found my copy of this book at Powell's in Portland for about ten bucks but you can get them on Amazon for six bucks or so if you go used. It is a nice first hand account of pre-punk New York history using interview from most of the primary players of the era and for that I can recommend it.

More reruns (The Pink Panther, Woody Woodpecker) and almost all live action shows save for these reruns. I don't that I watched much on NBC during this era! What a horrible SATURDAY MORNING CARTOON lineup!!!

I could find no video for MCDUFF THE TALKING DOG (it only aired for a short time and was replaced by SPEED BUGGY)

X Minus One and Dimension X

By now it should be no secret that I have a certain fondness for old science-fiction short stories and there isn't much that represents this genre (better than the genre itself) than the old radio dramas, X MINUS ONE and DIMENSION X. I have highlighted them before (and will probably do so again) but if you still haven't heard these shows and you are a science fiction fan you should do yourself a big favor and check them out. You can download them from www.archive.org for free so you really do have nothing to lose.

If you don't know where to begin I recommend MARS IS HEAVEN or THE ROADS MUST ROLL, two literature classics from the period.

Dimension X

X Minus One

Miss Universe 1972 with Bob Barker and Lynda Carter

The quality is pretty rough but if you stick with it you get a chance to see Bob Barker as a youngster (relatively speaking of course), highly dated fashions, and Lynda Carter as a finalist for Miss Universe. Not bad.

NBC Saturday Morning 1975

Another so-so year with EMERGENCY PLUS FOUR and SIGMUND AND THE SEA MONSTER showing only reruns (SIGMUND was eventually pulled and replaced with reruns of JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS) and the last season of the half-hour PINK PANTHER reruns. New this year was an old fave of mine RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES.

I searched for quite a while but never found any clips for GO U.S.A.!, the live-action kids show.

Going Fishing (actually Camping)

No blog posts tomorrow as I will be out camping with the family. Will resume on Sunday , including the next installment of Saturday Morning Cartoons. Thanks.

And no, I don't have one of the pictured trailers. I have a 1965 Roadrunner - 13 feet long - in Fair to Poor condition. It gets the job done!

Mexican Wrestling Movies - El Santo

I am not sure how many people know this but Mexican wrestling movies wery very popular in the 1960's and 1970's and spawned their own genre in that region. Most of them are quite silly and feature action that is best suited for six year olds but they all have their own charm that have developed a surprisingly large following here in the states (and abroad).

The Films Of Santo - a compreshensive website with a listing of all Santo films with reviews. Highly recommended. Link

wiki - the wikipedia entry is a nice place to start. Link

Santo Street - a magazine devoted to Santo. I am not sure if this is still in publication and I have only seen an issue or two so I can't vouch for quality or anything else. Link

X-Rated Movie Poster Gallery

Follow the link below to a small gallery of early X-Rated movie posters. We are talking real X-rated movies which would probably garner an R rating today - not the XXX stuff of today (fun fact - there really is no such rating as XXX). There is nothing graphic here and I am pretty sure that it is safe for work.

Complete Drive-In Intermission Loops

Bungling Burglar Loop

Professor Candy Loop

Big Top Loop

I used to love watching these things back in the day. We still have two drive-ins in our area but they don't show anything during the intermissions. Major bummer. I never saw the bungling burglar loop but the professor candy and big top loops were shown at one of the drive-ins that we frequented when I was a youngster. Fun.

Eye-Catching Buttocks Instantly

This one is kind of scary! I am glad that this thing never caught on. And it's kind of timely in that I was joking with my wife just yesterday about them not having a 'masculine hygiene' section at the grocery store.

Cardtalk - A Portable Record Player

I don't exactly know why I linked to this one but I think it had something to do with the days when my brothers and I would tape a needle to a cone of paper and then put this on a rotating record to hear it in lieu of using the electronics. I think we thought that we had made some amazing discovery...

It was hard enough manually spinning records at 33 RPM (or 45 RPM) on a greased and ready to spin turntable so I can't even begin to imagine the difficulties one would encounter trying this on a spoke at 78 RPM.

(and this is why all of those kiddie records that you see in thrift stores are so messed up!)

Vintage Drive-In Ads

I have been uploading a bunch of vintage drive-in ads to youtube (my account name there is AdamGott2). Here are a few samples:

NBC Saturday Morning 1974

Highlights this year were WHEELIE AND THE CHOPPER BUNCH and LAND OF THE LOST. Repeat city for THE PINK PANTHER and THE ADDAMS FAMILY (pathetic, considering that this was only the second season of this show's broadcast).

Bobopoly's View Master Scans

Anyone remember these old viewmaster reels? They took 2d animated characters and created 3d viewmaster reels in the vein of the old Rankin-Bass holiday specials. The bobopoly (a blog that I have just discovered) has posted a series of these scans.

Death Paints a Picture by Miles Burton (ebook review)

I was in the mood for a little light reading on my pocket pc so I browsed the rapidly increasing inventory of free vintage pulp fiction ebooks on the net and finally settled on this one (and a bunch more that I will be reading in the coming months and reviewing here).

What you get is pretty much your standard vintage murder mystery novel here. Three murders and a cartload of suspects make for a quick and enjoyable read in the classic detective genre. As I was reading this I could almost see the vintage black and white 'b' picture that would have accompanied this story.

Download the ebook for FREE in many formats.
